In Asaba, desperate actresses sleep their way to the top — Anna Patrick.

At what point did you  realise you have flair for acting?
While I was in secondary school, I was involved in school drama. That was when I realised I have flair for acting. Then, I said to myself, if I take this path, I would not regret it in life. That was it.
homevidpix3(anna)When did you feature in your first movie?
That was in 2012, and the movie was called”Kingdom of Blood.” I played the role of a maiden in the movie. It wasn’t a challenging role, even though I felt a bit intimidated starring alongside some big names in the industry like Ngozi Ezeonu, Frank Actus, Charity Eke among others.
How come after two years in the industry, you are already making waves?
When I joined the industry, it wasn’t easy for me to have my break. I had to struggle like every other up and coming actress. I met a producer/director called Nonso Ekene Okonkwo while I was still honing my talent in school. He told me that I have what it takes to become an actress, but I didn’t believe him, because I have heard stories concerning how producers and directors sexually harrass desperate actresses. However, when I completed my secondary education, I came looking for him. As a result, I signed a contract with him. Today, he is my manager as well as my mentor in the industry. With him, I didn’t have any ugly experience since I joined the industry. In fact, things have been working out well for me.

You talked of sexual harassment, is

The Gunmen laid ambush to Chibok Local Government Area of Borno state,  killing two security personnel suspected to be a soldier and a policeman before they abducted over 200 female students.
Our Correspondent gathered that the gunmen numbering over 100 using motorcycles, Hilux vehicles stormed the council’s headquarters at about 9pm, had a field day and left at about 3am on Tuesday morning.

Sources said, “apart from the abduction of the female students, the gunmen also carted away food stuffs, before setting many residential houses and shops ablaze”.
A lucky resident of Chibok who escaped the attack, Mr. Nuhu Amos in a telephone chat with our Correspondent  said, “ the gunmen armed with AK47 rifles, Improvised Explosive Devices ( IED’s ) and petrol bombs stormed Chibok on Monday evening and attacked one of the security posts, and shot two security personnel, before

Missing girls: An act of terror against education of girls-Michelle Obama .

The mass kidnapping of schoolgirls in Nigeria was an “unconscionable act” of terror against the education of girls, US First Lady Michelle Obama said Saturday.
Speaking in her husband’s place during President Barack Obama’s weekly Saturday morning address, Michelle Obama said that this violence “was not an isolated incident … it’s a story we see every day as girls around the world risk their lives to pursue their ambitions.”
“Like millions of people across the globe,” Michelle Obama said, “my husband and I are outraged and heartbroken over the kidnapping of more than 200 Nigerian girls from their school dormitory in the middle of the night.
“This unconscionable act was committed by a terrorist group determined to keep these girls from getting an education – grown men attempting to snuff out the aspirations of young girls.”
On April 14, 276 schoolgirls were abducted in the northeastern Nigerian town of Chibook, and the kidnapping of eight more girls from Warabe on May 5. Three weeks later 223 girls are still missing.

#BringBackOurGirls: Shettima in tears, declares three days fasting, prayers.

GOVERNOR Kashim Shettima of Borno state  has appealed to the people of the state irrespective of religious inclinations to embark on three days fasting and prayers beginning from Monday 12th to Wednesday 14th May, 2014 for the safe release of about 236 female students abducted by suspected Boko Haram terrorists in Government Girls Secondary School Chibok last three weeks ago.
Shettima said, the fasting and payers from all and sundry became necessary as all efforts put in place to rescue the innocent girls by security agencies and government proved abortive.

Shettima made the plea to the people of the state yesterday when members of Kibaku Area Development Association (KADA), BORNO state chapter led by Mr. Alabeh Grema Mdurbula led hundreds of his members on a peaceful protest to the governor at the government House,  Maiduguri, the state capital.
Governor Shettima who was visibly shedding tears when KADA community paid him the protest visit, assured them that since the ugly incident, security agencies, state and federal government have been having sleepless nights on how to rescue the innocent school girls.

Jonathan knows who to arrest but affraid to do so!!

The ex-governor was rushed out of Maiduguri.
A former governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff, who has come under attack since Tuesday’s bomb blast in Maiduguri, has said the outlawed Boko Haram sect is not responsible for the blast.
Mr. Sheriff blamed Borno State government officials and members of his All Progressives Congress, APC, for the blast that is believed to have killed at least 31 people with dozens more injured.
The blast, carried out by a suicide bomber in a pick-up van, occurred at about 1:30 p.m. in the state capital.
Shortly after the incident, angry youth gathered in their hundreds and attacked persons and property linked to Mr. Sheriff. They blamed the ex-governor, who returned to the state over the weekend after a 11-month absence, for the attack. Several cars, and buildings, were damaged and burnt by the youth.
While the rampaging youth went wild, the ex-governor, who was billed to hold an inaugural All Progressives Congress, APC, meeting where interim party officials in the state would be inaugurated, shelved the meeting and left the city. He was accompanied by the state police commissioner and other top security chiefs in the state.
SHERIFF REACTS
In his reaction, Mr. Sheriff blamed officials of the APC in Borno State for being the architect of the blast and coordinated attacks on his property and vehicles of his supporters.
He alleged that the attacks, including the bomb blast, were

I will not sleep until abducted girls are rescued says Jonathan.

Abuja – President Goodluck Jonathan says he will “not sleep” or rest on his oars until the over 200 abducted girls in Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno, are rescued.
He stated this at a world press conference to mark the end of the World Economic Forum on Africa (WEF) hosted in Abuja.
Jonathan, who appealed to the parents of the abducted girls to be patient and cooperate with government, said that the girls and their abductors were still within Nigeria.

Michelle Obama to give address on Nigeria kidnaps

WASHINGTON, May 9, 2014 (AFP) – First Lady Michelle Obama is to speak out against the kidnapping of more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls by Islamic militants when she gives the weekly presidential address instead of her husband, the White House said Friday.
White House deputy spokesman Eric Schultz said Michelle Obama would focus on the issue of the mass abductions in an address on Saturday to mark Mother’s Day, which falls on Sunday in the United States.
“As the mother of two young daughters, Mrs Obama is taking up the opportunity to express outrage and heartbreak the President and she share over the kidnapping of over 200 Nigerian girls of their school,” Schultz told reporters aboard Air Force One.
“The First Lady hopes that the courage of these young girls serves as an inspiration … and a call to action for people around the world to fight to ensure that every girl receives the education that is their birthright.”
US presidents issue a weekly radio address on a subject of their choosing. A video version is also posted on the White House website each Saturday.
Michelle Obama has often appeared alongside her husband during the addresses, but this will be the first time she has spoken alone.
Earlier this week, she expressed solidarity with the kidnap victims, tweeting a photograph of herself holding a placard bearing the slogan #BringBackOurGirls, the hashtag used as the rallying cry for a viral campaign calling for the schoolgirls’ return.
President Barack Obama on Tuesday described the kidnapping by Boko Haram militants as “heartbreaking” and “outrageous” as Washington deployed military experts in the hunt for the children.

I started acting in 2012. That was the year I left school, University of Nigeria. 2012 was also my service year too, so instead of just wasting my time doing nothing in the Federal Ministry office where I was posted for my primary assignment as a youth corper, I decided to take a step forward, come down to Lagos after to pursue my dream.

The President said this at the opening plenary of the World Economic Forum on Africa holding in Abuja.

Jonathan thanked China, the U.S., United Kingdom and France who volunteered to assist Nigeria in the rescue efforts of the girls and in fighting the terrorists
“Let me specially thank all of you for accepting to come. Especially this time that as a nation we are facing attacks from terrorists.
“Let me appreciate you individually and collectively for your support and your sentiment.
“In fact by your presence here in Nigeria at this time, you have already supported us to win the war.
“If you have refused to come because of fear, the terrorists would have jubilated and even have committed more havoc.

Shekau made Boko Haram more ruthless

LAGOS (AFP) – The insurgency waged by Boko Haram’s leader Abubakar Muhammad Shekau, who claimed the kidnapping of more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls, has grown so ruthless that even former Islamist allies have cut ties.
Born in a village in Nigeria’s northeastern Yobe state on the border with Niger, Shekau had a traditional Islamic education in neighbouring Borno state, where Boko Haram was founded more than a decade ago by the cleric Mohammed Yusuf.
After meeting Yusuf, Shekau joined his movement made up largely of radical youths who believed that the prevalence of Western education and values were to blame for many of Nigeria’s problems, including egregious corruption and crippling poverty.
Boko Haram, which loosely translates as “Western education is forbidden”, is a nickname that the Islamists have disowned, referring to themselves as Jama’tu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet’s Teachings and Jihad).
Awareness and condemnation of Shekau spread across the globe this week after he released a video boasting about the April 14 mass abduction in Chibok, Borno state, in which he threatened to sell the hostages as “slaves”.
But for Nigerians, the chilling

Osaze: I’ll prove I have changed

Returnee Eagles forward Osaze Odemwingie insists he will prove that he is changed man when he links up with the African champions later this month for an international friendly against Scotland on May 28 at Craven Cottage, England and pre-World Cup training camp in Houston, Texas.
Osaze has been handed a World Cup lifeline by Eagles coach Stephen Keshi, who named the 32 year old Norwich City forward in his 30-man provisional squad for the World Cup, kicking off June 12 in Sao Paolo.
Osaze earned his place in the team after ending his feud with Keshi. The duo fell out after the former Lille and West Brom star was sensationally excluded from Keshi’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations squad. Nigeria won the title, all thanks to the striking duo of Emmanuel Emenike and Victor Moses.
But following his public apology to Keshi and the Nigeria Football Federation and his rise in form in the EPL, which has seen him scored five goals in the colours of Norwich, the former Lokomotiv Moscow star has found his way back in the Eagles mix and vows to make the most of the precious opportunity to play at the biggest stage of world football.

Speaking to the Stoke Sentinel, Osaze said “I am very excited to be included in the provisional squad for the World Cup and hope to show everyone that I have changed and will prove my worth for the good of the team”.
Odemwingie, 32, last featured for the Eagles during a barren draw against Rwanda in February 2012.
And in separate chat with BBC Sport, Osaze who has played 55 time for Nigeria, admitted that “I made mistakes in the past but I’ve put all that behind me now. I thank the manager for this chance.
“This is good for my career because I am in a better place right now. I just want to make my own contribution to the team and my country.”

Abducted Chibok Girls: Nigeria’s Sore Thumb

When the abduction of over 200 girls took place in Chibok a day after the first Nyanya Bomb blast my heart bled. My heart bled for the girls.  My heart bled for the parents and relations, and my heart bled for Nigeria my country. I remembered my good friend, brother and classmate Dauda N. Iliya. We grew up together in Mubi. Had our primary Education in Mubi before going to Federal Government College Warri for our Secondary Education. He is today at the National Secretariat of  USOSA, the umbrella body of all old students of Unity Schools in Nigeria. He is as much a son of Mubi as myself, perhaps even more since he has direct telephone contact with the Emir of Mubi. But his roots are in Chibok.
His middle name is Ndirpaya, and that name kept appearing among the many names that made the various lists as victims or victim’s relatives. I kept praying for Dauda Iliya knowing that definitely this unfortunate saga may affect one of his blood relations. I tried his number several times to console him and tell him how truly disturbed I was. In this madness that has engulfed Nigeria, we are all victims. It is either you are a direct victim or an affected person. It was not too long ago we finished mourning my brother in-law who was killed by the insurgents. When I reflected on the Chibok abductions, I realized that it was God’s way of focusing attention on what has been going on in the North – East for a very long time. Women had been abducted since the commencement of the insurgency, but we were all too busy focusing on the sensations of church bombings, Mosque killings, market raids, village sackings etc to notice. But in this war on terror, women have always served as booty, same times by both sides.
I recall a video clip that made the rounds recently. A young boy definitely a teenager was captured and interrogated on camera. His confessions were quite revealing. He spoke frankly and as a matter of fact. He gave details of the activities of insurgents including locations and modus operandi. When asked what they did with abducted women, he was very straight.

BUHARI TO BOKO HARAM: You’re bigots masquerading as Muslims.

In his most pointed denunciation of the Boko Haram insurgency, former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.), yesterday, urged Nigerians to put aside politics and all other divisions to crush the insurgency he said is fanned by mindless bigots masquerading as Muslims.

Buhari, a leading opposition political figure, in the statement made available to Vanguard, sympathised with the immediate families of the girls kidnapped by the Boko Haram group, saying he shared their pains as a father and grandfather.
He said: “Over the past few weeks, the abduction of the schoolgirls at Chibok, Borno State, has underscored the threat we have been facing as a nation in recent times from the actions of misguided persons masquerading as adherents of Islam.
“Our hearts are with families who have lost loved ones in this

Nigeria World Cup provisional list: Hamilton, Onigbinde, Nwosu react.

Stephen Keshi’s provisional 30-man list for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil yesterday elicited mixed reactions from some notable stakeholders in Lagos.
The much awaited list was finally released on Tuesday in Abuja, after Keshi had met with the Technical Committee of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA).
Paul Hamilton, a former coach of the Super Eagles, said that he was satisfied with the list and had implicit trust in their ability to perform.eagles-train
Hamilton, who was also a Chief Coach of the Super Falcons in the early 1990s, said that it was normal for some people to make the list while some would not.
“The list is not an endless one which can take everyone and so what we are seeing is expected.
“Keshi knows what he wants and I am sure he used that in his selection process, I am sure that he has good intentions,” he said.
A former Golden Eaglets Chief Coach, Henry Nwosu, urged Nigerians to support and respect Keshi’s selection.
Nwosu said Keshi is the head coach and the World Cup is a major competition so he would not want to disappoint people.

EFCC traces N200m to Prisons accountant

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested the head of Capital Accounts at the Nigerian Prisons Service, NPS, Abuja, for alleged corruption, money laundering and abuse of public office.
Imaobong Akon Esu-Nte, a level 14 officer, who is on secondment to the NPS from the Federal Ministry of Finance, was picked up by the operatives of the EFCC, Tuesday, and grilled for several hours over the huge amount of money found in companies’ accounts all traced to her.
Operatives of the agency reportedly swooped on Esu-Nte following intelligence reports that she had been using her office to transact business as a private contractor in violation of extant public service regulation, which forbids civil servants from doing so.
Investigators said that the lifestyle of the suspect, who is on a monthly salary of N121, 460 was at variance with the level of opulence being displayed by her.
Apart from tracing the sum of N200 million to companies owned by her and her children, the EFCC said the woman had also been remitting money amounting to N60 million into the account of an Abuja-based Pentecostal church.

Why we dumped Edo APC —Ize-Iyamu

BENIN—FORMER Vice Chairman South-South of All Progressives Congress, APC, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who resigned from the party with his loyalists Monday, yesterday, described as laughable, the tirade from his former party that his obsession for the 2016 governorship race led
to his exit from the party.
Speaking to Vanguard, he said: “I read Osaro Idah who said he is the interim chairman of APC, and that pathological fixation over my rumoured ambition to be governor of Edo State led to my resignation from the party. The man that decamped to APC in Egor, was it because of Ize-Iyamu’s ambition? Abubakar Momoh, who is a member of House of Representatives, was it Ize-Iyamu’s governorship ambition that made him leave the APC also?
“The problem in Edo North that warranted Alhaji Shagadi and Abubakar Momoh to resign, was it Ize-Iyamu’s ambition that caused that? There are fundamental problems in the party. I read them describing those of us who left as actually cancer in the party. By this confession, they
are saying that the party is terminally ill and if they think that the cancer has left because we have left, let me tell them that they will now realise that the cancer has not left because when you have cancer, which is a terminal illness,

We ‘ll not accept govt of insurgency, blackmail— Southern peoples assembly.

ABUJA—STATESMEN, prominent leaders of the three geo-political zones of the Southern part of the country, under the aegis of Southern Nigeria Peoples Assembly, SNPA, rose from a meeting yesterday, with a strong condemnation of insurgency in some parts of the country, warning that it would not be ruled by a government that would be a product of insurgency or blackmail against President Goodluck Jonathan.
According to the group, no amount of intimidation by the insurgents and their sponsors would force President Jonathan to abdicate the powers given to him or refuse to seek re-election.
The leaders, who called on President  Jonathan to urgently close the borders with neighbouring states, warned: “Let it be known that the people of Southern Nigeria shall not allow themselves to be ruled by any government that is a product of insurgency or blackmail if the sponsors of insurgency in this country think they can brow-beat and pummel the government of President Goodluck Jonathan to abdicate the authority and mandate freely given to him by Nigerians to rule this country.”
The meeting, which took place Tuesday night in Abuja, had former Vice President Alex Ekwueme, former Federal Commissioner for Information and South South leader, Chief Edwin Clark, and Retired Bishop of the Anglican Communion, Akure Diocese, Bishop Bolanle Gbonigi, as co- leaders.
While Chief Edwin Clark served as host chairman, Dr. Ekwueme was represented by Dr. Dozie Ikedife.
In a communique signed by Clark, Gbonigi and Ikedife, the SNPA, with members drawn from the South South, South East and South West geo- political zones, declared its unflinching support for President Jonathan on his resolve to employ all means and

Both the US and the UK had earlier given their word to President Goodluck Jonathan to assist Nigeria.
The abduction of the girls had triggered series of protests across Nigeria and in some other countries, with protesters demanding that world leaders should take drastic actions to rescue the girls. They said the abduction of the girls in Borno State had created fears in their minds, noting that girls were now targets of insurgents.

Mrs Obed said:  “Ever since I heard of the abduction of the school girls at Chibok in Borno State, I have been worried over my two daughters who

He said, “Three suspects were taken in for questioning, suspected of being among the arms traffickers that supply Boko Haram. The stock of weapons was sizeable, and we think the plan was to bring them through Cameroon before taking them to Nigeria.”
Wednesday, Airvibez gathered that other suspected terrorists were arrested by Nigerian military troops while trying to escape into Cameroon through Taraba and Adamawa.
Earlier this month, six suspected fighters and one Cameroonian soldier were killed in clashes after Boko Haram infiltrated into neighbouring Cameroon.
A number of terrorists were also arrested in Adamawa State when they came out of hiding in the forest due to hunger in their makeshift camps.
